COTTO and COCCIOPESTO

Cotto colorato, cotto tradizionale e coccio pesto

Cotto tiles(terracotta), is a traditional Italian material which today continues to be enjoyed both because of its enduring aesthetic qualities and also because it ages very well. The cotto we sell is hand made using only clay and water resulting in a completely natural ecological product. It is ideal both for interior and outdoor floors and the wide variety of colouring, forms and texture ensure it maintains its contemporary aspect.
Cocciopesto, the modern Italian name for the Roman opus signinum is a material which originally come from phonecian north Africa and then spread throughout the Roman Empire.
It is made of tiles broken into very small pieces tempered with pit lime.
Its resistance to water and humidity spread its use beyond Rome as well as in Venice and its empire.
It is widely used for restoration work on historic buildings in both northern and southern Italy. Cocciopesto is an ecologically compatible material for pavements and other aesthetically qualified surfaces.

Cotto: form and finishing

The tile are square, hexagonal, rectangular or sticks of various sizes.
The traditional colours go from straw yellow to dark red including varieties of pink and ochre.
There is also light gray, charcoal gray and black as well as various types of opaque or glazed surfaces.

Maintenance of cotto and cocciopesto

For ordinary maintenance it is sufficient to remove any excess dirt and then wipe with a damp cotton cloth soaked in water diluted with a light detergent.
We suggest that the surface colour be brightened regularly with a specific wax according to use (generally every 8/9 months).
